MOORESVILLE, NC – A pair of blasts by No. 2 Mooresville (35-10) catcher Brandon Odachowski made the difference in the Spinners 6-2 victory over No. 7 Charlotte (18-22) Thursday night at Moor Park in the first round of the CVCL Playoffs.
Odachowski clubbed a grand slam in his first at bat of the game, and then swatted a solo shot over the left-field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Those two swings were the separation the Spinners needed.
Charlotte hitters, though combining for 11 strikeouts, threatened by getting a runner in scoring position in three of the first four innings, but were kept off the scoreboard by Mooresville starter Cole Lovin and reliever Trey Watts.
The Crushers finally broke through in the fifth off Watts.
Max Barrios singled to center with a runner on first, and the throw to third base by the center fielder sailed into the Spinners dugout. The throwing error allowed Bradley Isaac to score from first, and Barrios was awarded third.
He then scored on a ground ball put in play by Noah Whalen.
That was all the offense the Crushers could muster.
Mooresville did a majority of its scoring in the first inning, with the help of Odachowski.
Charlotte starter Chris Isaac allowed each of the first two hitters to reach base and then walked Seth Hartings to load the bases with just one down.
Odachowski hammered an Isaac delivery over the fence in left, giving Mooresville an early 4-0 lead.
Back-to-back doubles by Mike McHugh and Dillon Love plated another run.
Odachowski’s second long ball of the evening four innings later gave the Spinners a comfortable four-run cushion.
Due to its loss Thursday night, Charlotte falls to the loser’s bracket and plays in an elimination game Friday afternoon against the North Wake Fungo (26-15) at 2 p.m.
The winner of that game advances to play on Saturday. The loser is eliminated.
Snapped Scoreless Streak
Odachowski’s homer off Isaac in the first inning ended the Charlotte starter’s 21.2 consecutive innings of scoreless baseball.
The five runs Isaac allowed Thursday also matched his season total.
