Crushers Defeat Carolina Coyotes

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Charlotte Crushers (5-6) earned a 5-1 victory over the Carolina Coyotes (0-3) Thursday night at Thomas Eaton Field at Victory Christian Center School.

Charlotte jumped out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-RBI single by Daniel Barrett. The lead was extended to 3-0 on a ball put in play by Josh Evans, resulting in a defensive error that allowed Noah Whalen to score.

Barrett finished a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with the two runs batted in.

That was all the run support Crushers starting pitcher Chris Isaac would need.

Isaac scattered just two hits over his five innings of work on the mound, while striking out two and pitching to just three batters over the minimum. He recorded 1-2-3 innings in the top of the first, third and fifth frames.

Both of Isaac’s strikeouts came at good times.

His first ended the top of the second, stranding a runner at first base.  The second was a looking strikeout to Grady Wright, hitting with two runners in scoring position, both of which would be left stranded.

Charlotte added two more runs in the fourth, giving Isaac a 5-0 lead.

For the second time in the game, Whalen scored on a Carolina defensive miscue, this time on a ball put in play by Hayden Coffman.

Coffman scored later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Josh Hollifield. The inning ended on that play, though, as Garrett Goldberg was doubled off trying to advance to third base. Coffman touched home before Goldberg was tagged out, meaning the run counted.

Goldberg joined Barrett in having a two-hit game, and combined to collect four of the five total hits for Charlotte.

The Carolina defense committed five errors, and Carolina pitching hit three batters and walked four more.

Joseph Hope and Patrick Humphery came in in relief for the Crushers, and both pitched well. Hope picked up three strikeouts and surrendered the lone run, though it was unearned. Humphery came in to close things out in the ninth, striking out one and inducing a pair of ground balls.

Charlotte is back in action on Saturday in a double header at Lenior.  First pitch in game one is scheduled for 5 p.m. You can hear the broadcast of those games on
