The Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles completed a trade Tuesday night sending one-time All-Star Mark Trumbo to Baltimore in exchange for back-up catcher Steve Clevenger.
Last season Trumbo split time between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle. He hit a total of 22 home runs and drove in 64 runs while hitting for a .262 average.
Trumbo’s most productive years were from 2011-2013 with the Los Angeles Angles.
He finished second in the 2011 Rookie of the Year voting and the next season was voted to his first and only All-Star appearance.
Trumbo missed part of the 2014 season due to a foot injury, but bounced back somewhat this past year.
Clevenger has been a career backup on the Cubs and Orioles, playing in no more than 40 games in one season in Baltimore.
This past year was his best season with the O’s.
Trumbo can fill a number of open spots for Baltimore. He is capable of playing first base, a corner outfield spot, and can be the DH.
Orioles fans should be happy with the acquisition of Trumbo, however, it most likely means that Chris Davis will not be re-signing with the club. But it should be noted that Trumbo can put up similar numbers to Davis when healthy.
Overall, it’s a good trade for Buck Showalter and the O’s. They add a power bat to the lineup and filling in a hole at multiple positions while getting rid of extra help at the catcher position where it isn’t needed.
